Maus I & II
Maus is a graphic novel by Art Spiegelman that takes a metaphorical look at the holocaust. Using graphic novel format, Art Spiegelman tells the story of his parents, holocaust survivors, and paints a brutal picture of what the Holocaust really meant to those oppressed by the Nazis.
Day 1: Introduction to the text: Today we will visit the computer lab to do some background research on this graphic novel.
I. First, we will learn a little about Graphic Novels. Check out the following websites. When you are finished, write 2-3 paragraphs describing what you have learned about the written format and way to read graphic novels (turn this in via Edmodo when you are finished with part II, please): 1. Graphic Novels: History and Basics -- A short overview of the literary genre Graphic Novels 2. The History of Comics -- this "two chapter" guide to comics shows some of the development of comics over the past century. II. Then, read the article "What is Maus" by Evelyn Burg of La Guardia University. Then, under your paragraphs for part one, write a brief description of what you know about Maus so far. Include your reactions to the characters and your predictions for what we will find in the text (keep this in the same document as part I and turn it in via Edmodo before continuation to part III). III. Lastly, grab some headphones and check out NPR's interview with Art Spiegelman and a few articles related to this text. These articles will give us adequate background to begin the text. (You will need to click on "add to play list" to listen in the NPR Media Player) Or you can listen to it on Edmodo. IV. There is also an interview with Spiegelman about the 25th Anniversary of Maus from NPRthat you can listen to or simply read the interview highlights. When you have finished all of this, see Ms. Gossling to get your copy of Maus and reaction questions for the prologue. Your reading assignment is to read the prologue, answer the questions, and then read "The Sheik" pages 9 to 24 in Maus. |
