The 1920s Game
This game, provided by the McCord Museum in Canada, will teach you several new things about the 1920s in North America. Please fill out the guided worksheet given to you by Ms. Gossling, or you can access it here, or via the Google Classroom. You must turn it in via the Google classroom or hard copy for review.
The Great Gatsby Treasure Hunt
This treasure hunt is based on a treasure hunt updated and authored by Dana Huff. Her treasure hunt was based on an original by Valerie Abizu (whose site no longer works).
Directions
Follow the directions given for each section. Answer thoroughly in complete sentences on your own paper. Utilize the links I have provided for you, but do not "cut and paste" -- rephrase the answers in your own words. Please type your answers and turn them in via Google Classroom or print them and turn them in hard copy. You can find the answer document here or on Google Classroom.
Major Influences on the Novel
1. F. Scott Fitzgerald: Skim the biography of F. Scott Fitzgerald. List at least 5 major influences on his life & writing. Describe their effect as well.
2. World War I: After the war ended, the economy skyrocketed, making it possible for people to spend more time and money on leisure activities. After reviewing the website in this section, list three major innovations that came out of the WWI experience. After the War: List the dominant postwar American attitudes and the major movements of the 1920's. Pay close attention to the attitudes of the "Lost Generation" and the "Prosperity & Consumerism" movement. 3. 19th Amendment: What right did women gain from the passage of the 19th Amendment? 4. The Roaring Twenties: List at least 4 events that happened during 1922, the year the novel is set. Include a prediction for the effect those will have on the novel. 5. 18th Amendment: What, exactly, does the 18th amendment abolish? What was the result? The 18th Amendment 18th Amendment: Results 6. Prohibition: What is a Speakeasy? Based on the information you have already collected from previous questions, why do you think Speakeasies popped up across the country? 8. Flappers: Read the first 5 paragraphs of the article about "Flapper Jane." According to the author, what are the essential elements of being a true flapper? After reading the article, look at the selected photos of Louise Brooks. Does she fit the "Flapper" profile as proposed by the author of "Flapper Jane"? Why or why not? Read Dorothy Parker's poem "The Flapper." Do you think Ms. Parker approves or disapproves of Flappers? Explain. 9. Automobiles: Why were cars considered the most important change of the 20th century? Gatsby Coachworks: Reproductions of 1920's era automobiles. The white and gold car is similar to what Jay Gatsby would have driven. 10. 1920s Slang: Read some 1920s slang. Then, list at least 5 words/phrases and definitions from the site and write them down. Then, tell me why you choose each of those terms. |
